The Scottish Referendum September 18 2014

Scots, and people of Scottish descent around the world , await with interest the referendum to decide “if Scotland is to be an independent nation . “

This is the culmination of a 20 year campaign, which began with the movie Braveheart in 1995.  Mel Gibson played William Wallace, and a new generation of Scots were introduced to the idea of a Scottish independence movement.

Prime Minister, David Cameron and Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmon  signed the Edinburgh Agreement, in October 2012, to confirm the Scottish Parliament’s power to hold the historic vote.

A year ago, the yes campaign was approximately 33%, but now approximately 47% of Scots  support independence.  More than 4.4milion Scots are eligible to vote in the September 18 referendum. The voting age has been lowered to 16 years, allowing 124,000 new voters.

At a family dinner in Fernhill, Glasgow my relatives in  late May 2013, said that” they did not support the Yes Vote. “They felt that “Scotland could not afford to go it alone.”  I wonder how my grandparents, who emigrated to Australia  around 1912, would have viewed this referendum .

I have travelled extensively in Scotland during my visits in 1974-75; 1979-1980 ; 1983-1984; 1996-97 and 2013. I have visited many historic sites and cities ,  and acknowledge that the Scots are a very stoic and proud people.

In 1975, I recall visiting the historic battlefield at Culloden near Inverness. This left an impression on me.  I also recall a train trip from Glasgow to London, in late January 1984, in which the train driver presented an excellent commentary as we travelled south .  Upon crossing the border, he pointedly acknowledged that” we were now in England.’

On June 2  2013,  I attended the Scottish Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Dog Show, at Haddington near the English border. As I sat on the bus travelling to the Dog Show, I wondered how those areas close to the English /Scottish border would cope should Scotland gain its independence. (People in these areas live their lives on both sides. )

A very important decision will be made on Thursday in Scotland. History will determine if the Scots made the correct decision on September 18 2014 .
