ANNE FIELD’S BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S HISTORY

The Australian Federation of Business and Professional Women

PRESENTED AT  BPW  SYDNEY CLUB

Tuesday,  February 5 2008

Thankyou  for the honour of recognising  women who have been long standing members of BPW. (The  Australian Federation of Business and  Professional Women)

I joined BPW, in approximately,1978 at the invitation of the late BPW member Peg Boundy. In 2008, I will celebrate 30 years membership of BPW.

Peg was a retired school teacher, and former primary school Principal, who lived in Kogarah. She was involved in many community groups, and had a wide circle of friends. She encouraged me to join the then Hurstville BPW Club, which met in Electricity House, Forest Road, Hurstville.

Membership began to decline, and the Club decided to change its name to St George District BPW Club. The Club met at Kogarah RSL, until the mid- 1990’s when the Club folded.

Over the years, I have been President and Secretary of the St George District BPW Club a number of times. I enjoyed organising the visiting speakers for the Club; some years we printed a yearly programme.  Each year, we held a candle lighting ceremony to signify that BPW has members around the world, and has affiliation to the United Nations.

After St George  District, BPW closed in the early 1990’s, I joined Sutherland BPW Club. I attended infrequently, due to Council commitments. In September 1991, I had been elected to Rockdale City Council, and had heavy Council commitments, so my BPW attendance was sporadic. In September 1999, I was elected to Kogarah Council.

Sutherland BPW Club folded approximately in 2002-2003, and I then transferred my membership to Ryde Hunters Hill Club. This Club folded in early 2006, due to a lack of members, so I then transferred to Sydney BPW Club.

Over the past decade, I have had to cope with the care of elderly parents- my mother had Alzheimers Disease, and died in late 2002 after 8.5 years in a Nursing Home. My father died in late January 2007, and I looked after him for 3 years. I had to work in my job as a teacher, and cope with my Council commitments, so the going has been very tough.

I have read the BPW Federation newsletters with interest. In May 2006, I was awarded an Edna by WEL (Womens Electoral Lobby) for my services to Women in Local Government. In mid -2006, I was entered into the inaugural edition of the Whos Who of Australian Women and have featured since then.

At the end of 2009, I may consider retirement after 33 years teaching Social Science – Geography , Commerce, Legal Studies. Thirty two of those years have been spent at St George Girls High School in Kogarah. My next career is as a writer. I will complete a local Social History, and then plan to move on to write other books.

BPW has adapted well to technology with electronic newspapers. Whilst BPW is working hard at raising its profile, I do believe however that, as an organization, our name is not readily recognizable.  We need some high profile Australian women to be members and “to promote the cause.”

Much still needs to be done with issues concerning women in this nation. Our legislatures around the nation are still full of males making legislation for women!
