A WEEK RECOGNISING AUSTRALIAN HISTORY

The celebrations on Saturday November 1 2014, in Albany, Western Australia acknowledged the beginning of Australia’s World War 1 involvement .
When I sailed out of King George Sound on April 19 2012, to put my bottle with my Scottish Grannie’s history in it, into the Southern Ocean, I could only wonder at the historic events that had taken place here in November 1914.
Our nation’s political history was acknowledged with Gough Whitlam’s Memorial Service at the Town Hall on November 5 2014.
Some people enter politics and achieve little; others make a contribution; very few leave a legacy to the nation . Gough is one politician, who has left a substantial legacy.
I had the opportunity to serve on Rockdale Council (1991-1995) with Bill Morrison , I recall Bill , whilst on Council , as an articulate speaker and the consummate political operator. I admired his skills. I had the opportunity to catch up with his daughter , Melanie at the November 8 2014 reunion of the 1984 girls from St George Girls High School .
Over the years, I also met other members of the Whitlam Government :Tom Uren , Bob Whan and Doug McClelland . I admire the painting of Tom Uren in the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra.
These two events highlighted the importance of acknowledging significant occasions and people in our nation’s history.
